If you’re unfamiliar with SUPERNATURAL, the fan adored CW show which “revolves around two brothers, Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Sam Winchester (Jared Padalecki), who are nomadic demon hunters that ride from town to town in order to investigate and vanquish supernatural evil” then I suggest you catch up by either renting Season 1 and 2 right now, or checking out this article I wrote a while back for theTVaddict.com. This article will be here when you get back. I’ll wait.
Those who are familiar with SUPERNATURAL may think it a bit strangely cyclical to want a movie of a TV show that initially advertised itself as a weekly horror movie. Because the show has maintained and perfected that high concept, cycling through many of the urban myths that have been already covered in movies, it might even seem a redundant suggestion to ask for yet another derivative horror/supernatural movie to subject ourselves to on the big screen.
Here’s the thing though. A SUPERNATURAL movie could very easily be able to avoid being just another THE GRUDGE or THE RING rip-off, and instead transcend that sub-genre and become something much more exciting and epic. Yes, SUPERNATURAL does do its horror-movie-a-week thing, but it still manages to move past those gimmicky roots with a knack for thrilling, over-arching mythologies and narratives that would be perfectly suited for feature film treatment. Anyone who has seen the greater Yellow-Eyed-Demon story arc in Season Two knows what I’m talking about. It knows how to handle the “good” stuff and give us the grander scope.
All the other elements for a good movie are in place too. You have two solid, interesting, complicated, damaged, charming and funny main characters in the Winchester Brothers. You have two excellent actors (especially Jensen Ackles) whose chemistry together is so good they can convey their characters complicated relationships and past in a matter of minutes. They have an excellent crew of writers and directors, any of whom would be worthy of getting the feature film promotional bump.
There would be some hurdles of course. Ackles and Padalecki aren’t exactly bankable stars nor are their film track records the best, either because they make questionable choices or are being pigeonholed into the kind of bad horror movies SUPERNATURAL is trying not to be like. As a result, the studio would probably want a relatively low-budget production for minimum risk. They would also have to market the concept heavily to people outside of the 3 to 4 million viewers who tune into the show on a weekly basis. Problem is, they would probably market it exactly like one of those bad horror movies, ensuring those with horror-fatigue don’t check it out. So it is perhaps a Catch 22, but I think worth the risk.
So what do you SUPERNATURAL fans out there think? Would you like to even see a SUPERNATURAL film, or do you think it should stay where it is on the boob tube? If you do want a film, should it be an in-between-seasons kind of deal like the first X-FILES movie, or a after-the-show-is-over situation like… well, the second X-FILES movie? What would you like to see in a film (aside from Ackles and Padalecki’s hunky faces)? Finally, for those of you who are less familiar with SUPERNATURAL, does the basic concept appeal to you as a feature film? Could it work?
Celebs Dish Up Diet Secrets, Inferiority Complexes
Here's what we love: TV Guide, the magazine devoted to sitting on our butts watching TV, wants to give us tips for getting in shape.
Why do you think we enjoy television, TV Guide? Because we don't want to think about how we haven't gotten in shape!
That said, we do enjoy toned, half-naked celebs, so click on for some of the important tips we gleaned from the stars in the Hot Bods issue:
Jared Padalecki, thank goodness, gives us a reason to run out and get this issue. The Supernatural man has a fitness regimen that we can totally integrate into our TV-loving lifestyle: “I really have to make sure I eat and eat and eat."
The new issue hits newsstands Thursday, June 26. Maybe you can get someone to pick it up for you and bring it by your house. Preferably with a pizza.
Creator of Supernatural signs new deal which may bring paranormal prequel
THE CREATOR and executive producer of cult series Supernatural has entered a two-year deal with Warner Bros TV that could see a spooky spin-off to the hit programme.
Showbiz magazine Variety said Eric Kripke had signed the exclusive deal and would continue to produce and run the show, which enters its fourth season this autumn and follows the adventures of demon-hunting brothers Sam Winchester (Jared Padalecki) and Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles).
Kripke also will start to develop other projects. There's no details yet about whether one of the new titles might be a Supernatural spinoff, but Kripke previously said that he is interested in doing a prequel to Supernatural that takes place in the Old West and centres on the show's mythology.
Kripke spoke recently to TV Guide with some spoiler information about what's coming up in the next season. The site also reports that Jensen Ackles is on the nominations ballot for the 2008 Emmy Awards in the category of Outstanding Lead Actor in a Dramatic Series.
Ackles, 30, is currently in Pittsburgh filming horror flick My Bloody Valentine: 3D, in which he plays Tom Warden, a mentally unstable young man who returns to his home town ten years after a series of 22 brutal murders were committed and finds himself the lead suspect. The movie comes out on January 23, 2009.
Jared Padalecki, 25, spoke to Splatter Films about the next Supernatural series.
Something strange is going on with Jared Padalecki's undies
Supernatural pin-up boy Jared Padalecki is feeling a little snug in the pants.
The 25-year-old Hollywood actor arrived eight hours late in the country without his bags which had been misplaced en route, along with all of his clothes.
As a result his first stop when he arrived in Sydney was to pick up some new underpants, but for a guy who spends most of his time battling the paranormal on the Network Ten hit show Supernatural as Sam Winchester, buying grundies proved quite a challenge.
"I had to go buy clean underwear with the crazy Australian sizes that I didn't understand," he told AAP in Sydney.
"Sixteen? 18? I have no idea what size I am - we do small, medium and large.
"They're far too small - they're like a thong. It's embarrassing."
But the hoards of teenage girls who queued up to see Padalecki at the Supanova Pop Culture Expo in Sydney didn't mind.
Hundreds of fans of the show waited in line for hours to see Padalecki and grab an autograph or a photo.
Padalecki, who made a name for himself playing teen heartthrob Dean on the hit show the Gilmore Girls, says meeting his fans is one of the biggest perks of the job.
"It's exciting to do stuff like this - people are coming to see you and take pictures, and give you compliments and take photos with you and want your autograph - you definitely feel cool after doing it," Padalecki joked.
"We put in so many hours on this show that it's nice to meet people face-to-face as opposed to seeing ratings - a meaningless number on an internet site somewhere."
Padalecki filmed Disney movie A Ring of Endless Light in Australia in 2002 and then a remake of House of Wax with Paris Hilton in 2005.
He is one of many stars who have turned up in Sydney to greet fans at the Supanova Expo, including Jewel Staite from Firefly and Stargate: Atlantis, Kandyse McClure from Battlestar Galactica, and the stars of Gladiators and Heroes.
The Expo, which runs all weekend at Sydney Olympic Park, celebrates all things imaginary from Star Wars to Superman, Halo to Harry Potter and Transformers to Tomb Raider.
I tend to keep a realistic perspective when it comes to awards shows. For example, I don't expect movies like Iron Man or The Dark Knight to be nominated for Best Picture Oscars, nor am I shocked when shows like Supernatural are denied Emmys. After watching enough awards shows you begin to realize that the best things don't always get nominated, especially when it comes to genre entertainment.
Though I've come to understand how confusing and unreliable these shows are, I can still be shocked by certain exclusions. The nominees for the 2008 Teen Choice Awards came out today, and despite the fact that nearly every show on television was nominated for something, Supernatural was completely shut out. What's wrong with teens today?
If you click here to see the list of nominees, you'll notice that the Teen Choice Awards have a category for everything imaginable. I'm pretty sure they invent category after category just to ensure that everyone in Hollywood under the age of 30 feels inclined to attend the ceremony. You wouldn't think anyone with a brain would ever contemplate whether Flavor of Love or I Love New York was the better show, but the Choice TV: Looking For Love category demands you think about such things.
With approximately three million categories to choose from, it seems that Supernatural would easily fit into a few of them. Choice TV Show: Action Adventure wasted space on Heroes and Smallville, while the acting category features the likes of Wentworth Miller and Tom Welling instead of Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki. At the very least, the two men of Supernatural should have made it into the Choice Male Hottie category, but somehow the Jonas Brothers and their hideous haircuts made it in instead.
I normally wouldn't feel a need to rant about this, but nearly every other show on the CW was given some attention. Smallville, Gossip Girl, One Tree Hill, Beauty and the Geek and America's Next Top Model are all up for awards, but Supernatural is suspiciously absent. I don't know who decides the nominees for the Teen Choice Awards, but I feel they seriously shortchanged a series that had a very successful season. It's a strange exclusion, and I simply can't see a reason for it.
Of course, in the long run the Teen Choice Awards aren't important enough to have a rage blackout over. Supernatural is already coming back for another season in the fall, and I'm sure Jared, Jensen, and creator Eric Kripke will be happy to work hard even without being awarded for it. The recognition from obsessive Supernatural fans outweighs a chintzy surfboard trophy any day.
13 Things We Want to See in the New Friday the 13th
As an avid fan of the Friday the 13th franchise, I was extremely excited when Supernatural's Jared Padalecki was cast as the lead in the upcoming remake. Unlike most teen slasher movies, which are notorious for having virginal females save the day, the Friday the 13th films have managed to give both sexes a shot at defeating the villain. If you're going to have a man face off with the unstoppable killing machine known as Jason Voorhees, who better than the guy who plays monster hunter Sam Winchester every week? It seems like a perfect bit of casting for what's shaping up to be a very promising remake.
In honor of today being Friday the 13th, we decided to put together a list of 13 things we hope to see in the latest installment of the venerable horror franchise.
Jared is going to Australia for the Supanova Pop Culture Expo convention in Sydney on June 21st & 22nd and Perth on June 28th & 29th!
Following the postponement of 'Heroes' actress Hayden Panettiere's Australian appearances, a new star is shining in the Supanova Pop Culture Expo line-up: JARED PADALECKI, who plays Sam Winchester in the Ten Network's 'Supernatural', will be joining us for our Sydney and Perth expos! All SUPA-HERO PASS benefits are being transferred to him.
Jared looks forward to meeting all his fans at Supanova and will be appearing at both the Sydney and Perth events. His Schedule for appearances is as follows:
Padalecki: Losing Jensen Would Be 'Supernatural' Hell
This story contains MODERATE SPOILERS for upcoming episodes of "Supernatural" on The CW.
Jared Padalecki recently took a moment in his busy schedule to chat with reporters on the set of his movie "Friday the 13th" (a reboot that combines elements of the first three films) about his cult favorite The CW series "Supernatural."
He told reporters that shooting for the upcoming fourth season is planned for the first week of July, barring an actor's strike in July. The early shooting schedule should allow "Supernatural" to air new episodes with "Smallville."
Padalecki knows nothing about the next season. He hasn't seen a script or spoken with series creator Eric Kripke. The only person involved in "Supernatural" that he has talked to is his co-star Jensen Ackles, who is currently shooting his own horror movie, "My Bloody Valentine 3-D." Both of their horror films are slated for an early 2009 release.
"He and I have just been keeping in touch, you know? But I haven't seen scripts or read scripts or heard any ideas. So I'm completely" in the dark, Padalecki said.
Ackles' character Dean faced a terrible fate in the Season 3 finale.
Fans are concerned about Dean's fate after he was last seen dangling from hooked chains in Hell. Some worried that Jensen Ackles may have been written off the show. Padalecki is in the dark too, so is he worried that his co-star may not be coming back?
Padalecki isn't thrilled with the idea of starring in the show without Ackles, but was pretty optimistic that he would be back.
"I'm sure Jensen is going to be a huge part of the show, as he always has been. Same as always. Just in hell," Padelecki said with a laugh.
Don't worry too much though. Kripke recently told TV Guide that Dean will be back, but there will be a big mystery surrounding on how he escaped. He has also revealed that Ruby and the hunter Rufus will return as well.
